How often should I reapply Linseed Oil to timber garden beds?

By Jess @_prettyliving

Timber is a popular choice for DIY garden beds in Australia because it is affordable compared to other materials and has a natural, attractive appearance. Since timber is biodegradable, it needs regular maintenance to ensure it lasts.

For garden beds already in place, DIGGERSTM Raw Linseed Oil is a natural option for timber care. It penetrates deeply into the timber, sealing it against water, UV exposure, cracking and drying. This helps your garden bed remain strong and visually appealing.

This garden bed was built two years ago and treated with DIGGERSTM Raw Linseed Oil from the beginning. A fresh coat has been applied every 6 to 12 months. Thanks to this maintenance, the timber is still in excellent condition even after more than six months of rain, hail and sunshine since its last treatment.

Signs It Is Time to Reapply

You can tell it is time to reapply if you notice:

  • The timber’s colour and appearance look dry or dull
  • Water no longer beads on the surface and instead soaks in

If either applies, the timber needs a fresh coat.

How to Reapply DIGGERSTM Raw Linseed Oil on Timber Garden Beds

Follow these simple steps to protect and restore your timber garden beds:

1. Clean the timber thoroughly to remove dirt or debris. You can use DIGGERSTM Mineral Turpentine to help cut through grime and prepare the surface.

2. Allow the timber to dry before application.

3. Mix 50:50 DIGGERSTM Raw Linseed Oil with DIGGERSTM Mineral Turpentine in a bucket.

5. Wipe away excess oil with a clean lint-free cloth.

6. Let the timber dry completely before touching or using the garden bed.

Safety Tip: Always soak used cloths in water immediately after use. Linseed oil can cause spontaneous combustion as it dries, so it’s important to soak used cloths in water and dispose of them correctly and safely.

Timber garden bed maintenance with DIGGERSTM Raw Linseed Oil is easy. By repeating this process every 6 to 12 months, you will keep your raised timber garden bed durable, nourished and looking its best.
