How to clean and degrease a bike chain with DIGGERS™ Kerosene

By Jess @_prettyliving

DIGGERS™ Kerosene is a hydrocarbon liquid that is commonly used as a fire starter or as a fuel for heaters, lamps and portable cookers, but did you know that it can also be used as a cleaning and degreasing solution for engines, other car parts and bike chains?

By following these simple 5 steps you can get your bike chain looking shiny and free of old grease and grime in no time with DIGGERS™ Kerosene:

  1. Safety first! Before cleaning with kerosene, it’s important to wear personal protective equipment including heavy duty gloves, a P2 face mask and safety glasses. Find a well ventilated space to work in (outside is best recommended) and place the bike upside down onto a tarp or drip tray to catch any spills.
  2. Pour approximately half a cup of DIGGERS™ Kerosene into a container.

  3. Dip a sponge into the kerosene and then cup the bike chain with the sponge while slowly rotating the pedal, keeping in mind to keep fingers out of way of moving parts. Rinse the sponge and/or add more kerosene as needed until you have reached a full rotation of the chain and all the grease and grime has been removed.

  4. Once the chain is clean, fill a small bucket with warm soapy water, dip a clean cloth or rag into it and wash over the entire chain. Wash thoroughly to remove any remaining kerosene and then rinse off with water.

  5. Use a rag or cloth to dry the chain, rotating the pedal until all parts are dry. Once dried, re-apply your choice of lubricant to the chain.
